The Workshop: Application of new materials in Highway and Infrastructure
The Faculty of Civil Engineering, Ton Duc Thang University, and Tensar International Limited held a workshop titled “Application of new materials in Highway and Infrastructure” on December 22nd, 2023.
At the workshop, the expert from the Tensar company shared experience in designing and constructing roads and infrastructure. Geogrids are typically manufactured from oriented high-density polyethene (HDPE) or polypropylene (PP) for durability, stiffness, and strength. They can be used in subbase, base, and surface layers. There are several types of geogrids, such as InterAx (NX) geogrids, TriAx (TX) geogrids, TriAx (TX-G) geocomposite, Uniaxial (RE) geogrids, Biaxial (SS) geogrids.
In addition, the calculation of the flexible pavement by using geogrids was presented in this workshop using AASHTO and Vietnamese specifications. Free online software was introduced to calculate layers for asphalt pavement. The expert indicated that using geogrids significantly decreased the thickness of the subbase and base layers and reduced the CO2 emission in highway construction.
Throughout the workshop, students were excited and had discussions with the experts. Besides, the workshop has provided knowledge for lecturers and students. Some pictures obtained from the workshop are as follows:
